Not trying to start a rumour, just wondering...

The dead.net "Dead 09" graphic has three planets in it. If you click on the Saturn-looking one you get a Hartford 77/to Terrapin picture with "Coming soon - stay tuned" at the bottom of it.

I assumed it was a reference to the show in Hartford on the upcoming Dead tour but why the 77 reference?

Just thought it might be a hint of the new release some people have been wondering about.

I am sure this is not a rumor.....a while back, Charlie Miller mentioned that he was going to release an upgrade to 5/28/77. The fact that he hasn't probably means that it is slated for commercial release. That, and the fact that I heard an incredibly clean version of this show on Sirius a couple of weeks ago.

Personally, I prefer the previous show on 5/26 from Baltimore....but maybe only due to the setlist. 5/28/77 does rock for sure.

quoting charlie miller at the LL site:

re: 5/28/77

The complete show has been in circulation from the vault master reels since 2000. They are crystal clear and do not have any cassette gens in them. I can confirm that they are from the master reel.

I would have no problem whatsoever w/another May '77 release, cleaned up and decked out. Best is best, after all.

Plus, that Hartford show 5/28 is one of THE most underrated killer shows of all time. Just brilliant.

grendel, what do you like about 5/28? the show holds up relatively well from start to finish, but can you consider anything but the Sugaree to be above average?

I'm gonna have to give this one another listen. I might have been 77'd out by the time I got to it ......

Hey D&M...

I urge you to go back & listen to this show...obviously you may not have the time to do it all in one sitting, but like much of May '77 the glory of this show is in its totality....how splendid nearly every song is played and how consistently it all comes together.

The aforementioned SUGAREE is a monster...but hey, so is nearly every played in '77....is this 5/28 version necessarliy "better" than, say 10/16/77? Not really, but that's not the point...it DOES, however, come out of a killer BERTHA>GOOD LOVIN' combo...really, all of the first set is just so smooth (Like the "buttery 5/25/77 Mosque show) but I would argue this one rocks a little harder.)

Then there is the majesty of the 2nd set. Again, I think this needs to be appreciated as a whole continuum...what i love about '77, more than any other year, is how the FLOW of these 2nd sets are performed. In no other year do they give the impression of a confident, fluid, continuous stretch of real excellence...the 80's shows are often choppy...some of the songs feel hurried (you get a lot of 6 minute GDTRFB in order to fit in a 5-minute Watchtower, etc.) and certainly there are more gaffes amid the high points...the early 70's shows (to me--just my preference) are often marred by 30+ minute Darkstars that feature atonal bass solos by Phil or 4 minutes of nasty feedback...I guess if that's your thing, OK...but to me it's just less focused than what happens in '77...)

anyway, back to 5/28/77...what I really urge you to listen to is the stretch of ESTIMATED>PLAYIN>TERRAPIN>(short)DRUMS>NFA>WHARF RAT>PITB REPRISE>SAT NIGHT and just listen to the strong riffs Jerry plays (esp. in Terrapin and WharfRat--one of the best) , and the ease with which each song flows into the next...there's just a mastery to this show that is indicative of the whole month of shows, and as this is the last show of that magical month, I think it serves well as a summary of what they did so well then.

Given that there is also a pristine source, with a crystal clear, strong sound...I would welcome any official release of this show.

I do realize this is ultimately subjective, but do go back and check it out again and check back in and let me know if you feel any differently.

GC

Thanks grendel! Outstanding. It's not the posts where we all agree that make this place so valuable. The value comes when we disagree - and learn. I will definitely give it another shot. Looks like I didn't give it enough credit.

Hey man...You nailed it on th' head...

I learn something nearly every day from this motley Ship Of Fools...Tell turns me on to the acid-days of the late 60's....Liam Finnegan is the master of the 'check this one version of a so-and-so tune' out that ALWAYS is worth it...SDH always has a killer TDIH to recommend (and seems to share my preference for 1981 as THE best year of the 80's...) and various characters have changed my mind on shows from the early to mid-70's I would otherwise have ignored...and any time anyone wants to talk '77 I'm all ears!

healthy & intelligent disagreements often lead to new discoveries...

...once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right....

a wise man once said something to that effect ;-)

Nice find!! However, I hope this is not true; do we really need another May '77 release?

We don't need 5/28, but if this tortoise is heading on a Road Trip(s) from Hartford in 1977, he's heading to California for the four shows in June - a release we would all love to see.

That is one gigantic stretch though. It's probably just an ad for the upcoming tour.

I dunno. That Hartford show was a stand-out as far as being a total show that was pretty damn good even for 77. A lot of the 77 shows are good but only in beautiful spots. This one nails the month shut.

I would buy it.

Soundboard of 6/4? Now THAT would be something!

Well the tortoise seems to be heading to Terrapin on the "Hartford 77" highway. That could mean anything!

It's a strange way to announce a new release...I think it's more just an obscure reference to the tour. Hmmm, I wouldn't MIND a May 1977 release, although I'm not sure it should be a priority.
